Design & Testing

APS BlackSteelÔ
discs and linings have successfully completed a rigorous design
and testing process in order to receive FAA-PMA certification.
The approval process often takes months or even years to
complete since the FAA requires that all PMA parts meet or
exceed the standards of the OEM factory part that they are
replacing. APS discs and linings are FAA approved direct
replacements for Cleveland brakes
under
this PMA approval.
Each disc is manufactured
from a single piece, premium quality carbon steel forging. When
the metal is forged it creates a directional grain flow that
follows the contour of the disc which reduces the risk of cracks
and catastrophic failure associated with the inferior welded
design.
APS uses the highest
technical standards available in its manufacturing processes,
producing a disc with extremely precise tolerances. This
ensures correct run-out values which eliminate disc vibrations
and ensures improved pad to disc fit for better break-in. APS
brakes have been tested by demanding dynamometer testing as well
as extreme flight testing.
APS
has the capability to maintain extremely tight tolerances with
state-of-the-art CNC lathes. When coupled with a
well-researched design and extreme testing, the result is a
longer-lasting disc with higher performance and greater safety
margins. After machining, the discs are subjected to a
proprietary heat treatment process that gives the discs their
characteristic
appearance.
The Black Steel is not only aesthetically pleasing but it
offers a high resistance to corrosion and oxidation associated
with the thermal cycling experienced in the aircraft braking
environment. The corrosion protection also makes the discs
particularly suited for agricultural aircraft that are exposed
to harsh chemicals as well as aircraft located in coastal areas
and aircraft that are left outside on the ramp full time.

APS
non-metallic linings are made from a patented formula which
includes Kevlar™ fibers. These fibers allow for maximum
gripping action while maintaining the integrity of the disc and
pad surfaces for longer wear.

A good many of our staff at APS are pilots
and we know how important it is to you to trust your braking
equipment. In a highly regulated and safety-conscious industry
such as aviation, APS goes beyond FAA and industry requirements
to ensure that you can brake with confidence.
